Dear Campton Hills Residents,
I have supported the incorporation of Campton Hills because I believe it is the only way to preserve our semi-rural lifestyle and quality of life that makes our community special. Our leaders have worked hard for the past one and one-half years building our new community. Unfortunately, a few dissatisfied residents who were unhappy that the people voted to incorporate have not accepted the will of the majority and now seek to dissolve the Village of Campton Hills. Preserve Fox Valley encourages you to Vote NO on the November referendum to dissolve the Village of Campton Hills.
We have seen an improvement in police protection, had an opportunity to voice our opinions on the formation of the Comprehensive Land Use Plan, as well as participate in CMAP planning workshops. We have also enjoyed two seasons of the Farmers’ Market and Heritage Farm Fests. Our leaders were the first to organize a response to the recent flooding crisis with community volunteers to fill and place sandbags for residents facing severe flooding. Village officials are also acting as your advocate with the County, State and Federal government to secure emergency relief funds made available following natural disasters. Our leaders also applied for various grants and have brought money into our community that would otherwise have not been available unless we had incorporated.
The Village is performing all of the municipal functions and more at no additional cost to residents.
The Illinois Department of Revenue spokesperson in Springfield, Katherine Ridgway, confirmed that Campton Hills is regulated by the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law (PTELL), or tax cap, which prevents the Village from raising property taxes without voter-approved referendum.
The Village leaders have been saying this for the past three years, yet the opposition continue to spread the fear that unless you dissolve the Village, your taxes will go up. Why are they so concerned about our tax bill? Do you think the supporters of the Village want to pay higher taxes? I would certainly not support a referendum for new taxes.
The fact is the Village gives us local control of zoning – which affects our schools, which affects our property taxes. Local control of the zoning is what concerns the developer, as well of the fact that the Village increased the Land/Cash Donations required for new developments. They developers would love for us to revert back to an unincorporated area so the taxpayer would be required to subsidize a larger share of the education of those moving into their neighborhoods. They don't want to pass the higher impact fees onto their customers because it makes their homes even more difficult to sell; they want you to pay for educating their customers!
As the Chairman of the Preserve Fox Valley Political Action Committee, I continue to support the Village of Campton Hills because I believe that local leaders elected from within our borders will make better decisions than people who do not live within our area. As a municipality, we also receive more motor fuel tax than when we were unincorporated and millions of our tax dollars that we already paid are being returned to our local community to benefit us.
For the above reasons, I encourage all voters to take the time to educate themselves on the issues and verify the information you are receiving. Get the facts before you buy into the scare campaign of those who desire to dissolve our community. Be cautious of the fear, lies and innuendo spread by those opposed to the Village. Call the Department of Economic Interest in Springfield, or stop by the Village office in the Campton Square Shopping Center to get the real facts. Don’t be fooled by amateurish scare tactics. Your property taxes cannot be raised by the Village. Period.
Consider who is backing this effort and why before you cast your vote. Without our Village, you will lose your advocates, your voice and vote on local issues. Without the Village, we would have no one to turn to and only one County Board member looking out for our interests who can be easily outvoted on issues by the other 25 County Board members who may not even be familiar with our area. This vote is too important to ignore.
Please join me and Vote No to dissolving the Village of Campton Hills on November 4th.
